Washington driving practice tests

Instruction Permit

Washington's guide is unusually plain-spoken, which cuts both ways: it states some rules as memory aids rather than law, and it leaves out numbers the test still asks for.

Finish a set and we'll build this from what you actually missed - the questions you got wrong, weighted, plus more from the topics that tripped you up. Nothing to drill yet.

The real test

40
Questions
32 of 40 (80%)
To pass
  • 40 questions, 32 correct to pass. No section split and no published time limit.
  • The Driver Guide itself never states the question count or the pass mark - only the DOL website does. Studying the handbook alone, you would never meet these numbers.
  • A passing score stays valid for two years, and the test is offered in twelve languages.

Read the official handbook

This is the source everything on the real test comes from, and it is free. Practice questions find your gaps; the handbook fills them. Read it on the government's own site so you get the current version.

Watch out for

Rules that catch people out in Washington specifically.

  • Permit and intermediate licence holders cannot use a phone at all - hands-free included, unlike every other driver in the state.
  • There is no Washington wipers-on-headlights-on law. The guide offers it as a memory aid; the actual trigger is half an hour after sunset and the 1,000-foot visibility rule.
  • Yield when you pull onto a paved road from an unpaved one, and treat a dark signal as a four-way stop.

Real exam difficulty.

The Ones People Fail On

Hard · 35 questions

Washington's genuine traps: rules that differ from neighbouring states, thresholds that stack, and the handful of things the guide states in one place and the statute states differently.

The ones people actually fail on.
