Virginia driving practice tests

Learner's Permit

Virginia gates the whole exam behind signs: all ten sign questions must be right before the 30-question second part even opens. Miss one and you are done for the day.

Your weak spots

Finish a set and we'll build this from what you actually missed - the questions you got wrong, weighted, plus more from the topics that tripped you up. Nothing to drill yet.

The real test

40
Questions
All 10 sign questions, then 24 of 30 knowledge questions
To pass
  • Part one is 10 road sign questions and you must get every one right. Miss a single sign and part two never opens.
  • Part two is 30 general knowledge questions, needing 24 correct (80%).
  • One attempt per business day. Under 18, a failure means waiting a full 15 days; three failures means finishing classroom driver education first.

Read the official handbook

This is the source everything on the real test comes from, and it is free. Practice questions find your gaps; the handbook fills them. Read it on the government's own site so you get the current version.

Watch out for

Rules that catch people out in Virginia specifically.

  • Failing to move over is reckless driving - a criminal misdemeanour, not a traffic infraction.
  • 85 mph is reckless driving on its own, so 86 in a posted 70 zone counts even though it is only 16 over.
  • Radar detectors are unlawful to own in a vehicle, to use, and to sell - and carry no demerit points.

Practice sets

6 sets · 195 questions · feedback after every answer

Virginia Basics

Starter · 30 questions

The rules you meet on your first drive in Virginia: what the shapes and colours mean, who goes first, and the handful of numbers DMV's two-part knowledge exam expects you to know cold.

The basics, gently introduced.

Everyday Virginia Roads

Easy · 30 questions

The rules that come up on an ordinary Virginia commute - turns on red, lane markings, school zones and the numbers behind them - plus a first look at the provisions that are peculiar to the Commonwealth.

Core rules most people get right.

Real Exam Pressure

Medium · 35 questions

Thirty-five questions at the difficulty of DMV's part two, including the places where the manual and the Code of Virginia do not say quite the same thing.

Real exam difficulty.

Virginia Specifics

Medium · 35 questions

Thirty-five questions on the rules that are distinctly Virginia's: the move-over duties, the trash-truck clearance, the radar detector ban, and the numbers behind the demerit point system.

Real exam difficulty.

The Ones People Fail On

Hard · 35 questions

Thirty-five questions built around Virginia's genuinely unusual provisions and the thresholds that stack: move-over as reckless driving, the separate truck speed limit, the wheel-turning rules on hills, and the fines the manual understates.

The ones people actually fail on.

Exam Simulation

Exam simulation · 30 questions

Thirty questions in the shape of the real thing: signs and rules interleaved, no hints, and the tone of DMV's own sample exam. Virginia's real test is 10 sign questions you must get perfect, then 30 general knowledge questions needing 24 correct.

Full length, real rules, no hints.
