Tennessee driving practice tests

Class D Learner Permit

Tennessee is the rare state that tells you the syllabus but not the score: the manual publishes an exact topic split and no question count at all.

Your weak spots

Finish a set and we'll build this from what you actually missed - the questions you got wrong, weighted, plus more from the topics that tripped you up. Nothing to drill yet.

The real test

30
Questions
Tennessee publishes no question count or pass mark
To pass
  • The manual states the topic split exactly - traffic signs and signals 25%, safe driving principles 25%, rules of the road 25%, drugs and alcohol 25% - but never a question count or a score.
  • The drugs and alcohol quarter is a statutory floor: by law at least 25 percent of the questions must cover it.
  • The at-home proctored online test does publish 30 questions, 60 minutes and 80% - but it is open only to applicants aged 15 to 17, so those numbers do not describe the in-office exam.
  • No test may be repeated the same day, and a failed knowledge test carries a mandatory one-day wait.

Read the official handbook

This is the source everything on the real test comes from, and it is free. Practice questions find your gaps; the handbook fills them. Read it on the government's own site so you get the current version.

Watch out for

Rules that catch people out in Tennessee specifically.

  • The manual says outright that the Basic Speed Rule is not Tennessee law, then teaches it anyway.
  • Two interstate minimums, not one: 55 mph in the leftmost lane and 45 mph in the right lanes.
  • School-zone speeding is charged as reckless driving - six points on its own, which is the whole under-18 suspension threshold.

Tennessee Basics

Starter · 30 questions

The rules you meet on your first drive in Tennessee: what the shapes and colours mean, who yields to whom, and the handful of numbers the Department of Safety expects you to know cold.

The basics, gently introduced.

Signs, Signals and Everyday Rules

Easy · 30 questions

The core of the Tennessee exam: the signals and markings you read without thinking, the yielding rules that decide who moves, and the first layer of the state's penalty numbers.

Core rules most people get right.

Tennessee at Exam Difficulty

Real exam difficulty.

Tennessee Specifics

Medium · 35 questions

The rules that are Tennessee's own: the funeral procession law, the state's unusual position on passing multiple vehicles, the emblem laws, and the penalty numbers that come up again and again.

Real exam difficulty.

The Ones People Fail On

Hard · 35 questions

Railroad crossings, penalty schedules, work zones, equipment law and pavement markings - the five areas published practice-test data puts at the top of Tennessee's miss list, plus the stacked thresholds nobody expects.

The ones people actually fail on.
