South Carolina driving practice tests

Beginner's Permit

South Carolina's beginner's permit knowledge test is written from the SCDMV Driver's License Manual, a 141-page book built on the AAMVA model manual. The manual leaves out most of the numbers people expect - every speed limit, every parking distance, the adult BAC limit - so this bank fills those from Title 56 of the South Carolina Code and tells you where each one came from.

The real test

30
Questions
24 of 30 (80%)
To pass
  • The SCDMV does not publish the question count or pass mark on dmv.sc.gov or in the manual. The 30-question, 80% figure is what every practice site and driving school reports; treat it as unconfirmed and aim well above it.
  • Questions are multiple choice with three options (a, b or c), matching the manual's own sample questions and the SCDMV's official online practice exam at apps.sc.gov.
  • Taken on a computer at any SCDMV branch, or through a One Stop third-party tester. The knowledge test fee is $2.00 and the permit is $2.50.
  • You fail automatically if you leave the test area before finishing, talk to anyone, or bring written material or any electronic device into the test area.
  • There is no published time limit. The official online practice exam restarts after three minutes of inactivity.

Read the official handbook

This is the source everything on the real test comes from, and it is free. Practice questions find your gaps; the handbook fills them. Read it on the government's own site so you get the current version.

Watch out for

Rules that catch people out in South Carolina specifically.

  • The manual's following distance is 4 seconds, not the 3 most other states teach - and it adds 1 more second at night, 2 on an unfamiliar road at night.
  • School bus: on a two-lane road everyone stops. On a road with at least two lanes each way, only traffic BEHIND the bus stops. You must also stop for AMBER lights, not just red.
  • The manual never states a speed limit. The defaults are in the Code: 70 interstate, 60 divided multilane, 55 elsewhere, 40 unpaved, 30 in an urban district.
  • Headlights are required by law whenever your wipers are running for rain, sleet or snow, and from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise.
  • A permit, conditional or special restricted holder is suspended at 6 points; a full licence holder at 12. Points halve after one year.
  • Since 1 September 2025, simply holding a phone while driving is illegal: $100 first offence, $200 plus 2 points after that.

Practice sets

6 sets · 195 questions · feedback after every answer

South Carolina Basics

Starter · 30 questions

The rules you meet on your first drive in South Carolina: what the sign shapes and colors mean, who goes first, how the beginner's permit works, and the handful of numbers the SCDMV expects you to know cold.

The basics, gently introduced.

Core Rules of the Road

Easy · 30 questions

Thirty questions on the rules most South Carolina drivers get right: intersections, passing, lights, pedestrians and bicyclists, seat belts and child seats, and what the manual says about sharing the road with trucks.

Core rules most people get right.

Real Test Difficulty

Medium · 35 questions

Thirty-five questions at the level of the real SCDMV test: the GDL restrictions in detail, the numbers the manual leaves to the Code, and the scenarios where two rules meet.

Real exam difficulty.

Across the Whole Manual

Medium · 35 questions

A second exam-level set that reaches into the chapters people skip: the paperwork behind the licence, the checks you make before you move, trailers and rural roads, and the parking distances the manual leaves to the Code.

Real exam difficulty.

The Ones People Fail On

Hard · 35 questions

The South Carolina rules that catch people out: the school bus carve-out on multi-lane roads, the four-second gap where the rest of the country teaches three, the point totals that suspend a young driver at half the adult figure, and an alcohol chapter that is the densest cluster of wrong answers in the book.

The ones people actually fail on.

Exam Simulation

Exam simulation · 30 questions

Thirty questions in the mix a real beginner's permit test uses - signs and signals interleaved with rules, right of way, parking and emergencies - with no hints beyond what you would get at the SCDMV counter.

Full length, real rules, no hints.
