Pennsylvania driving practice tests

Learner's Permit

Pennsylvania asks only 18 questions but wants 15 right, so there is almost no room to guess - one of the tightest margins anywhere.

Your weak spots

Finish a set and we'll build this from what you actually missed - the questions you got wrong, weighted, plus more from the topics that tripped you up. Nothing to drill yet.

The real test

To pass
  • 18 multiple-choice questions. You need 15 correct, so you can miss only three.
  • Taken in person at a driver license center, no appointment needed. You may retake it the next business day, one attempt per day.

Read the official handbook

This is the source everything on the real test comes from, and it is free. Practice questions find your gaps; the handbook fills them. Read it on the government's own site so you get the current version.

Watch out for

Rules that catch people out in Pennsylvania specifically.

  • Only three wrong answers fail you - the tightest margin of any state here.
  • The snow and ice rule changed in 2022: a flat fine for not clearing your car, and a much heavier one if dislodged ice hurts someone.
  • Junior licence holders face an 11pm curfew and passenger limits that tighten after a crash or conviction.

Pennsylvania Basics

Starter · 30 questions

The rules you meet on your first drive in Pennsylvania: what the shapes and colours mean, who goes first, and the handful of numbers PennDOT's 18-question knowledge test expects you to know cold.

The basics, gently introduced.

Getting Comfortable

Easy · 30 questions

Core Pennsylvania rules most drivers get right once they have seen them written down: line markings, turn rules, the distances the manual expects you to know, and the first of the junior licence restrictions.

Core rules most people get right.

Real Exam Ground

Medium · 35 questions

The level PennDOT's knowledge test actually sits at: junior licence conditions, the Move Over law, the point system, and the numbers that separate a pass from three wrong answers.

Real exam difficulty.

Wider Ground

Medium · 35 questions

The rest of the manual: work zones, lane control signals, highway numbering, emergencies at the wheel, and the equipment and inspection rules PennDOT expects you to have read.

Real exam difficulty.

The Ones People Fail

Hard · 35 questions

Pennsylvania's stumpers: the snow removal law, what really happens at six points and at eleven, junior licence penalties, and the gaps where the 2021 manual and current statute disagree.

The ones people actually fail on.

Exam Simulation
