Ontario driving practice tests

G1 Licence

The G1 knowledge test is commonly delivered as two 20-question sections - road signs and rules of the road. We practise them separately so a strong half can't hide a weak one.

Your weak spots

Finish a set and we'll build this from what you actually missed - the questions you got wrong, weighted, plus more from the topics that tripped you up. Nothing to drill yet.

The real test

40
Questions
80% overall (commonly 16 of 20 per section)
To pass
  • Officially: the knowledge test has two or three sections and you need at least 80% overall.
  • In practice it is delivered as 20 road-signs questions and 20 rules-of-the-road questions, and candidates and practice resources treat each half as needing 16 of 20.
  • We score the two halves separately here, because that is the harder standard - clear both and you are covered either way.

Read the official handbook

This is the source everything on the real test comes from, and it is free. Practice questions find your gaps; the handbook fills them. Read it on the government's own site so you get the current version.

Watch out for

Rules that catch people out in Ontario specifically.

  • Signs and rules are usually delivered as separate halves, so people fail on signs while acing rules. We score them separately for that reason.
  • School bus red flashers: whether you must stop depends on whether the road is divided.
  • G1 holders are at zero blood alcohol and need a qualified accompanying driver.

Practice sets

6 sets · 220 questions · feedback after every answer

Set 1 - First principles

Starter · 30 questions

Sign shapes, default speed limits and the G1 restrictions themselves. One rule per question, nothing layered.

The basics, gently introduced.

Set 2 - Core rules

Easy · 30 questions

Signals, pavement markings, right of way and the numbers the G1 keeps coming back to. Still one rule at a time, but less obvious.

Core rules most people get right.

Set 3 - Full G1 shape

Medium · 40 questions

Forty questions in the shape of the real thing: roughly half signs and signals, half rules, with exact numbers and two-step scenarios.

Real exam difficulty.

Set 4 — Real exam pressure

Medium · 40 questions

Forty questions pitched at the difficulty of the real thing. Signs and signals make up close to half, exactly as the G1 does, and the rules items lean on the numbers people skim past.

Real exam difficulty.

Set 5 — The ones people fail on

Hard · 40 questions

Exact figures, sign pairs that look alike, and right-of-way problems with more than one step in them. Everything here is answerable from the handbook, but none of it survives skimming.

The ones people actually fail on.

Set 6 — Full G1 simulation

Exam simulation · 40 questions

Forty questions built the way the real G1 is: twenty on signs and signals, twenty on rules of the road, scored as two independent halves. No hints, no easy run-ins, and the difficulty spread of an actual sitting.

Full length, real rules, no hints.
