North Carolina driving practice tests

Learner Permit

North Carolina runs the signs test as a separate exam, and several of its rules are the opposite of what drivers from other states expect - the horn before overtaking, two feet of passing clearance, two seconds of following distance.

The real test

25
Questions
80% on the knowledge test, plus 9 of 12 road signs
To pass
  • The rule sets 80% correct on the knowledge test. No official source states how many questions that is.
  • Road signs is a SEPARATE test: identify 9 of 12 signs by colour, shape and meaning. Each test must be passed on its own.
  • Retake after 7 calendar days.

Read the official handbook

This is the source everything on the real test comes from, and it is free. Practice questions find your gaps; the handbook fills them. Read it on the government's own site so you get the current version.

Watch out for

Rules that catch people out in North Carolina specifically.

  • You must sound the horn before overtaking, and the driver being passed is legally required to help you do it.
  • Passing clearance is two feet and following distance is two seconds - lower than most states teach.
  • The unposted limit inside a city or town is 35 mph, not 25.

North Carolina Basics

Starter · 30 questions

The rules you meet on your first drive in North Carolina: what the shapes and colours mean, who goes first, and the handful of numbers NCDMV expects you to know cold before you sit the knowledge examination.

The basics, gently introduced.

Everyday Roads

Easy · 30 questions

The rules that come up on a normal drive across North Carolina: passing and being passed, lines and lane markings, the point system, and the state's own peculiar habits around horns, buses and mopeds.

Core rules most people get right.

Real Test Difficulty

Medium · 35 questions

Questions pitched where the real knowledge examination sits: the specific distances, the layouts that change the school bus answer, and the places where two North Carolina thresholds stack on top of each other.

Real exam difficulty.

Wider Ground

Medium · 35 questions

The rest of the handbook: moving over for stopped emergency vehicles, equipment and inspection rules, highway numbering, and the penalties North Carolina attaches to speed once you are above 55 mph.

Real exam difficulty.

The Ones People Fail

Hard · 35 questions

North Carolina's genuine oddities and its stacked thresholds: the horn that creates a legal duty, the point counts that change after reinstatement, the revocations that need two conditions met at once, and the rules that catch drivers who learned somewhere else.

The ones people actually fail on.
