New Jersey driving practice tests

Student Learner's Permit

New Jersey has more genuinely unusual rules than any other state here - it legislates for ice cream trucks, sets the curfew at 11:01pm, and declines to state a priority rule for traffic circles at all.

Your weak spots

Finish a set and we'll build this from what you actually missed - the questions you got wrong, weighted, plus more from the topics that tripped you up. Nothing to drill yet.

The real test

50
Questions
40 of 50 (80%)
To pass
  • 50 questions, plus a survey question about organ donation. You need 40 correct.
  • No signs/rules split and no per-section threshold - one flat 80%.
  • The manual is the only authority here; the MVC's knowledge-test page publishes neither the count nor the pass mark.

Read the official handbook

This is the source everything on the real test comes from, and it is free. Practice questions find your gaps; the handbook fills them. Read it on the government's own site so you get the current version.

Watch out for

Rules that catch people out in New Jersey specifically.

  • A dark or unlit traffic signal is a four-way stop - the single most-missed question in New Jersey, at a 55% error rate.
  • The manual says outright there are no set rules for traffic circles; priority falls to signage, then the established flow.
  • GDL holders wear Kyleigh's Law decals, face a 0.01% BAC limit, and cannot use hands-free at all.

Practice sets

6 sets · 195 questions · feedback after every answer

New Jersey Basics

Starter · 30 questions

The rules you meet on your first drive in New Jersey: what the shapes and colours mean, who goes first, and the handful of numbers the MVC's 50-question knowledge test expects you to know cold.

The basics, gently introduced.

Core Rules of the Road

Easy · 30 questions

The everyday rules the MVC expects you to have absorbed before you touch a wheel: passing, signals, parking distances, the graduated licence restrictions and the numbers that go with them.

Core rules most people get right.

Real Exam Difficulty

Medium · 35 questions

Thirty-five questions pitched where the real MVC test sits, including the New Jersey rules that exist almost nowhere else: traffic circles with no rules, safe passing distances, and the point schedule.

Real exam difficulty.

Documents, Vehicles and Penalties

Medium · 35 questions

The half of the New Jersey test that is not about steering: licensing deadlines, inspection cycles, point values, the penalties attached to them, and the vehicle rules the MVC enforces at the roadside.

Real exam difficulty.

The Ones People Fail On

Hard · 35 questions

Thirty-five questions built around the items New Jersey learners measurably get wrong: point values, suspension penalties, the stacked thresholds, and the rules the manual states once and never repeats.

The ones people actually fail on.

Exam Simulation

Exam simulation · 30 questions

Thirty questions at the length and mix of the real MVC knowledge test. Forty of fifty is the pass mark on the day, so treat 24 of 30 here as the line and no hints along the way.

Full length, real rules, no hints.
