Michigan driving practice tests

Temporary Instruction Permit

Michigan runs the test as two separately-scored parts - operator rules and signs - and you have to clear both. Pass one and fail the other and you retake the whole thing.

Your weak spots

Finish a set and we'll build this from what you actually missed - the questions you got wrong, weighted, plus more from the topics that tripped you up. Nothing to drill yet.

The real test

40
Questions
Both sections must be passed (Michigan publishes no score)
To pass
  • The test has two separately-scored parts: an operator section of about 45 minutes and a signs section of about 15 minutes. Both must be passed.
  • Pass one part and fail the other and you must return to a branch office and retake the whole test.
  • Michigan does not publish a question count or a pass mark anywhere. Any specific figure you have seen came from a practice-test site, not the state.
  • Applicants 18 and over may take it online; a pass is valid for one year.

Read the official handbook

This is the source everything on the real test comes from, and it is free. Practice questions find your gaps; the handbook fills them. Read it on the government's own site so you get the current version.

Watch out for

Rules that catch people out in Michigan specifically.

  • A left turn on red is legal from a TWO-WAY street onto a one-way - broader than most states allow.
  • The school-bus divided-highway exemption needs a physical barrier. A painted median or centre turn lane does not count.
  • Move over is two duties at once: slow to 10 mph below the limit AND change lanes.
