Class D Learner's Permit

The shortest exam on this site, and the least forgiving: 25 questions in 25 minutes, and a Junior Operator licence that punishes a single speeding ticket harder than most states punish three.

Your weak spots

Finish a set and we'll build this from what you actually missed - the questions you got wrong, weighted, plus more from the topics that tripped you up. Nothing to drill yet.

The real test

25
Questions
18 of 25 (72%) in 25 minutes
To pass
  • 25 questions, 18 correct to pass, 25 minutes. No section split.
  • Taken online, the exam fails you automatically after two minutes of inactivity, on timeout, or if you leave the browser window.
  • Cheating costs you 60 days holding no permit or licence at all. Each attempt costs $30.

Read the official handbook

This is the source everything on the real test comes from, and it is free. Practice questions find your gaps; the handbook fills them. Read it on the government's own site so you get the current version.

Watch out for

Rules that catch people out in Massachusetts specifically.

  • Two curfews half an hour apart: a learner's permit under 18 is midnight to 5 a.m., a Junior Operator licence is 12:30 a.m. to 5 a.m. Only a parent or guardian lifts either.
  • Breaking the Junior Operator night restriction is charged as operating without being licensed - a criminal matter, not a ticket.
  • Unposted limits run 20/30/40/50. There is no 55 in the default list, and a hydrant is 10 feet, not the 15 most drivers bring in from elsewhere.

Massachusetts Basics

Starter · 30 questions

The rules you meet on your first drive in Massachusetts: what the shapes and colours mean, who goes first, and the handful of numbers the RMV's 25-question permit exam expects you to know cold.

The basics, gently introduced.

Everyday Massachusetts Rules

Easy · 30 questions

The rules you use on every trip: lane lines, right of way at junctions, the unposted speed figures, and the restrictions that come attached to a Massachusetts learner's permit.

Core rules most people get right.

Real Exam Difficulty

Medium · 35 questions

Questions pitched at the level the RMV actually asks: the Junior Operator restrictions, the distances and dollar figures, and the Massachusetts rules that differ from the ones drivers bring in from other states.

Real exam difficulty.

Massachusetts Specifics

Medium · 35 questions

The rules that are particular to Massachusetts rather than general to driving: rotary and trolley etiquette, the local speed options, the Junior Operator penalty structure, and the numbers the RMV states as figures rather than principles.

Real exam difficulty.

The Ones People Fail On

Hard · 35 questions

The Junior Operator penalty structure, the chemical test tables, and the Massachusetts rules that live in the General Laws rather than in the manual. These are the items that separate a pass from a near miss.

The ones people actually fail on.

Exam Simulation

Exam simulation · 30 questions

Thirty questions across every topic the RMV lists for its 25-question exam, at real exam difficulty and with no hints. Rules of the road, signs, alcohol, suspensions and the Junior Operator Law, mixed the way the real test mixes them.

Full length, real rules, no hints.
