Indiana driving practice tests

Learner's Permit

Indiana words its tie-break backwards from everywhere else: at an all-way stop it is the vehicle on the LEFT that yields. Then at a dark signal it flips back.

Your weak spots

Finish a set and we'll build this from what you actually missed - the questions you got wrong, weighted, plus more from the topics that tripped you up. Nothing to drill yet.

The real test

40
Questions
80% on each of the two components (Indiana publishes no count)
To pass
  • Two separately scored components - traffic signs, and traffic maneuvers and laws. You need 80% or higher on EACH.
  • Neither the manual nor any BMV page states a question count or a time limit for this exam, so neither is claimed here.
  • A pass stays valid 180 days. A fail means waiting until the next business day, and you must arrive 30 minutes before the branch closes.

Read the official handbook

This is the source everything on the real test comes from, and it is free. Practice questions find your gaps; the handbook fills them. Read it on the government's own site so you get the current version.

Watch out for

Rules that catch people out in Indiana specifically.

  • At an all-way stop and at flashing reds, Indiana says the vehicle on the LEFT yields - the reverse of the usual wording. At a dark signal it reverts to yielding to the right.
  • Rural divided state highways are 60, not 55, and urban residential is 30, not 25.
  • Off a level crossing you run at 45 degrees TOWARD the oncoming train, which is the opposite of instinct.

Indiana Basics

Starter · 30 questions

The rules you meet on your first drive in Indiana: what the shapes and colours mean, who goes first, and the numbers the BMV's two-part knowledge exam expects you to know cold.

The basics, gently introduced.

Signs, Signals and Right of Way

Easy · 30 questions

The two halves of Indiana's exam meet here: what the sign or signal means, and who has to give way once you have read it. Both components need 80 percent, so neither half can be carried by the other.

Core rules most people get right.

Real Exam Conditions

Medium · 35 questions

Chapter 6, 7 and 8 material at the difficulty the BMV actually asks it - the numbers, the exceptions, and the rules Indiana states differently from the states next door.

Real exam difficulty.

Licensing, Points and the Road

Medium · 35 questions

The paperwork half of Indiana driving alongside the road rules: what a probationary licence lets you do, what points cost you, and the manual detail that only shows up once you read past the headline.

Real exam difficulty.

The Ones People Fail On

Hard · 35 questions

Indiana's exceptions, its stacked thresholds, and the rules it words differently from every state on its border. If a number here surprises you, it is the number the manual gives.

The ones people actually fail on.

Full Exam Simulation

Exam simulation · 30 questions

A full mixed paper across both of the BMV's components - signs on one side, the traffic rules of Chapters 6, 7 and 8 on the other. No hints, and the same 80 percent standard the real exam applies to each half.

Full length, real rules, no hints.
