Indiana driving practice tests
Learner's Permit
Indiana words its tie-break backwards from everywhere else: at an all-way stop it is the vehicle on the LEFT that yields. Then at a dark signal it flips back.
The real test
- Two separately scored components - traffic signs, and traffic maneuvers and laws. You need 80% or higher on EACH.
- Neither the manual nor any BMV page states a question count or a time limit for this exam, so neither is claimed here.
- A pass stays valid 180 days. A fail means waiting until the next business day, and you must arrive 30 minutes before the branch closes.
Read the official handbook
This is the source everything on the real test comes from, and it is free. Practice questions find your gaps; the handbook fills them. Read it on the government's own site so you get the current version.
Watch out for
Rules that catch people out in Indiana specifically.
- At an all-way stop and at flashing reds, Indiana says the vehicle on the LEFT yields - the reverse of the usual wording. At a dark signal it reverts to yielding to the right.
- Rural divided state highways are 60, not 55, and urban residential is 30, not 25.
- Off a level crossing you run at 45 degrees TOWARD the oncoming train, which is the opposite of instinct.
