British Columbia driving practice tests
Class 7L Learner's Licence
A flashing green light means the opposite here to what it means in Alberta, Ontario and the Maritimes - and that single sign catches more drivers moving to BC than anything else in the guide.
The real test
- 50 multiple-choice questions, 40 correct to pass, 45 minutes. No signs-and-rules split.
- The test ends early the moment you have enough right to pass or enough wrong to fail.
- You may skip each question once and it returns at the end. A failed test can be retaken after one day, for the fee each time.
- Roughly one question in five is about road signs, which ICBC says outright.
Read the official handbook
This is the source everything on the real test comes from, and it is free. Practice questions find your gaps; the handbook fills them. Read it on the government's own site so you get the current version.
Watch out for
Rules that catch people out in British Columbia specifically.
- A flashing green is a pedestrian-controlled light in BC, not an advance left. The advance left is a flashing green ARROW.
- Two seconds is the baseline following distance here, not three - but four separate situations push it to three.
- Passing distance is set by the POSTED limit, not your speed: one metre normally, 1.5 above 50 km/h, half a metre past someone on a sidewalk or in a protected cycle lane.
