Arizona driving practice tests

Instruction Permit

Arizona teaches two things no other manual does, and both run opposite to instinct: in a dust storm you turn your lights off, and driving around a flood barricade makes you pay for your own rescue.

Adaptive · rebuilt every time

Your weak spots

Finish a set and we'll build this from what you actually missed - the questions you got wrong, weighted, plus more from the topics that tripped you up. Nothing to drill yet.

The real test

30
Questions
24 of 30 (80%)
To pass
  • 30 multiple-choice questions, 80% to pass. MVD publishes no time limit and no retake limit, so neither is stated here.
  • Taken on a touch-screen at any MVD office without an appointment, or at home through a parent's AZ MVD Now account if you are under 18.
  • Offered in eleven languages, with an audio version, and a verbal test after a second or third failure.

Read the official handbook

This is the source everything on the real test comes from, and it is free. Practice questions find your gaps; the handbook fills them. Read it on the government's own site so you get the current version.

Watch out for

Rules that catch people out in Arizona specifically.

  • Dust storm: pull well off the road, turn your lights OFF and take your foot off the brake. Any light draws blinded drivers toward you.
  • Drive around a flood barricade and the Stupid Motorist Law makes you liable for the rescue, up to $2,000 - and your insurer may lawfully refuse to cover it.
  • Seat belts are secondary enforcement with a $10 maximum penalty and no points, which the manual never mentions.

Arizona Basics

The rules you meet on your first drive in Arizona: what the shapes and colours mean, who yields to whom, and the handful of numbers MVD's 30-question permit test expects you to know cold.

The basics, gently introduced.

Everyday Arizona Driving

Easy · 30 questions

Signals, markings, kerb colours and the rules that come up on an ordinary drive across Phoenix or Tucson - the core material MVD writes most of its 30 questions from.

Core rules most people get right.

Real Test Difficulty

Medium · 35 questions

Arizona-specific rules at the level MVD actually asks them: roundabouts, HAWK crossings, lane filtering, following distances behind emergency vehicles, and the desert conditions no other state's handbook covers.

Real exam difficulty.

Arizona Conditions

Medium · 35 questions

The desert-specific half of the manual, mixed with the everyday markings and turn rules: dust storms, flash floods, monsoon wind, work zones, and the emergencies that come with driving a long way between towns.

Real exam difficulty.

The Ones People Fail On

Hard · 35 questions

Rules Arizona states only in statute, thresholds that stack, and the figures the manual gives once and never repeats - the material that separates a pass from a near miss.

The ones people actually fail on.

Exam Simulation

Exam simulation · 30 questions

Thirty questions, the same length as MVD's real permit test, drawn across every section of the manual. Eighty percent - twenty-four correct - is the pass mark on the day.

Full length, real rules, no hints.
